The Telegraph Journal deserves bankruptcy. Nothing more or nothing less. Brunswick News needs time. Some more or some less.

Yep, a genius thought up that concept. Privatizing a damn river ferry. Oh, let's not forget the caveat - non profit organization pining to pick up the tab running a damned river ferry.

Scientists in Newcastle claim to have created human sperm in the laboratory in what they say is a world first.
The researchers believe the work could eventually help men with fertility problems to conceive.
But other experts say they are not convinced that fully developed sperm have been created.
Writing in the journal Stem Cells and Development, the Newcastle team say it will be at least five years before the technique is perfected.
They began with stem cell lines derived from human embryos donated following IVF treatment.
The stem cells had been removed when the embryo was a few days old and were stored in tanks of liquid nitrogen.

Self-Esteem: the wasted years

Isn't the entire public school curriculum focused on 'advancing' self-esteem? It seems that way. Aside from producing a generation of narcissists, the school system may be wasting their time and should revisit the curriculum. Maybe math, languages, history and science are best?

OTTAWA -- So maybe you've been reading all the self-esteem books, chanting the magic phases meant to bolster your self-image -- and you still feel lousy.

You're not alone. So-called self-help books may only help the people who need them least, such as those with high self-esteem, and can be destructive for those who really need help, according to a new study by Canadian experts published Thursday in Psychological Science.

Standing in front of the mirror chanting phrases meant to "empower" yourself -- like the one famously satirized in a Saturday Night Live spoof featuring fictional guru Stuart Smalley: "I'm good enough; I'm strong enough; and, gosh darn it, people like me!" -- can have a negative effect on those with low self-esteem, ironically the very people who tend to buy the self-help books in the first place, experts say.

In their study, psychologists Joanne Wood and John Lee from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, and Elaine Perunovic from the University of New Brunswick, found that individuals with low self-esteem actually felt worse about themselves after repeating positive self-statements such as "I am a lovable person" or "I will succeed," typically found in many self-help books.

During the study, researchers asked a total of 68 participants to repeat the self-help book phrase, "I am a lovable person."

The individuals with low self-esteem reported feeling worse after repeating the positive self-statement than did another low self-esteem group who did not repeat the self-statement, the study found. The participants with high self-esteem felt better after repeating the positive self-statement -- but only slightly.

They found that, paradoxically, low-self-esteem participants' moods fared better when they were allowed to have negative thoughts than when they were asked to focus exclusively on affirmative thoughts.

I don't doubt the research for one moment. Self-confidence builds character while self-esteem builds trouble.

Tyranny - the latch key of the modern liberal

Perhaps it is from reading Mark Levin's book, Tyranny and Liberty, that the 'current' state of the world has me concerned. Or, perhaps it is that I am awake, aware and alert that I am sensitive to reality. Either way, there are some writers who always hit the nail on the proverbial head when describing reality. Reality is different from 'a state of mind' where too many are confined and too many seem unable to escape. That's why I like truth because it helps one escape from a drug infested, or intellectually lazy condition brought about by modern liberalism, political correctness and cowardice.

David Warren is that writer:

I remember the outrage of a Czech exile, a generation ago (before the Communists had fallen), receiving an uptight, self-righteous lecture from a shallow Canadian acquaintance. The latter said the enslaved Czechs should be blamed for co-operating with their Communist masters. Why didn't they just refuse to obey orders?

He was speaking to a man who had spent 12 years in labour camps for disobeying orders. Yet that was beside the point. The Canadian was speaking about things beyond his comprehension. My Czech friend, who had turned almost purple from his effort to contain himself, said only: "You are a fool." His Canadian interlocutor walked off, looking even more pleased with himself than usual. This Czech could have said more. I will say it for him.

In contemporary Canada we also face tyranny, but of a sort that we have brought upon ourselves in ways no Czechs, no Persians, ever did. There is no regime in Ottawa that seized power by violence, and imposed the "politically correct" ideology on us from a party manifesto. The advance of this tyranny -- of the Nanny State and all its trappings -- has been accomplished in plain view, by incremental advances, with our co-operation.

In two generations, we have witnessed a transformation, and nearly an inversion, of all the moral and ethical principles that guided us through countless generations before. The "revolution" has been accomplished by such means as George Orwell predicted: by changing the meanings of words.

Most overtly it has been done with "rights language" -- by the construction of new, artificial and quite abstract "group" rights that are anathematic to individual freedom. But beneath this, we have watched court and legislative interventions to redefine such basic ideas as manhood, fatherhood; womanhood, motherhood -- a purposeful destruction of the family in the cause of extending the powers of the state. We have likewise watched the religious order of society being systematically undermined, so that atheism or "irreligion" has become the default position from which the state now issues its ukases.

And we have allowed this and more, through the very laxity that shallow Canadian condemned in Czechs. We have accommodated the new powers, for fear of being isolated and ostracized.

Tyranny -- dehumanization -- advanced, because men failed to be men, women failed to be women, and both sexes pretended to become "persons" on an analogy more animal than divine. And today, nothing in our country is quite as it appears.

I am a witness to the nonsense that many weakened Canadians espouse. David Warren's Czech example is typical. I hear ignorance stated unchallenged on call-in radio programs. I hear conspiratorial tales, knowing that the opinion holder is not in full control of his own thoughts, and I pity him. Yes, I pity him or her, for I know that they are dumbed.

Let's help stop tyranny here before it is too late.

Québec: Déclin Tranquille

MONTREAL -- The end of June, when the fleur-de-lys is flown from balconies and face-painted on children across Quebec to celebrate the Fête Nationale, is usually a high-spirited time for the Parti Québécois. But after starting the week with an embarrassing byelection loss on nationalist turf, the separatist party reeled from an even worse blow on Thursday when one of its most respected members announced he is quitting politics.
François Legault, a successful entrepreneur who entered politics in 1998 to serve in the Cabinet of then-premier Lucien Bouchard, said he detects little appetite among Quebecers for an audacious project such as the creation of an independent nation. And he warned that Quebec has entered a troubling slide that has it losing ground against other North American states and provinces.
"I leave," he said, "worried for the future of Quebec, worried because I sense that Quebec has begun a déclin tranquille [quiet decline], and this, unfortunately, too often in resignation and indifference." His phrase was a play on the Révolution tranquille, or Quiet Revolution, Quebec's modernizing push of the 1960s.

Quebec's decline may be the proverbial canary in the coal mine, and a warning to the rest of the country where modern liberalism/socialism have infested the country with hopelessness and despair.

Quebec came close to 'remembering' its values when the ADQ came close to replacing the government, but alas, they were crushed by the mainstream elites who wanted nothing to do with anything that made the French fact a force in Canada.

Bye, bye Quebec.

New regulations that will ban the use of lawn-care chemicals are being panned by critics on both sides of the issue.

Environment Minister Roland Haché announced on Thursday that the Liberal government had enacted regulatory changes that will prohibit the use and sale of 200 over-the-counter lawn-care pesticides and the pesticide 2, 4-D.

Ellen Snider, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Cancer Society in New Brunswick, said her organization was hoping the province would follow Ontario and make it a complete ban on lawn-care pesticides.

"I wish that the New Brunswick government had made the decision to align more closely with … the desires and wishes of the vast majority of constituents here in New Brunswick, and sadly that didn't happen," Snider said.

There will be some exemptions to the ban for the agriculture and forestry sectors, as well as golf courses.

The pesticide prohibition will take effect in the fall, giving stores enough time to pull the products off their shelves. Companies carrying out lawn-care services using commercial grade pesticides will have to acquire an integrated pest management accreditation by February 2010.

The new accreditation process will require businesses to curtail their "blanket treatment" on problem areas and promote spot treatment. The accreditation will be required when lawn-care companies seek operating permits.

John Evans, the president of Landscape New Brunswick, said he's unclear what the new regulations will mean for lawn-care companies.

"I would have liked to have seen the government consult with the industry a little more — to have more knowledge on this topic as far as writing regulations go — but for now I think it's been an important step," Evans said.

But David Coon, policy director for the Conservation Council, said he fears more people who have used pesticides on the banned list will turn to professionals to spray them instead.

"Our government blinked in the face of a strong lobby from the lawn-spraying industry to give them the ability to continue to spray pesticides on people's lawns, with the exception of 2, 4-D," Coon said.

The statists are always at it - pushing their statist utopia and demanding that the taxpayers pay MORE. Ontario statists want parents to send their babies to them. They are hoping to spread their government run family centers across the country - a model they hope will end the hopelessly outdated notion of a man and woman actively caring for their children. Children don't need daydream time, they have to have daycare time - and loads of it. Pity them all - children raised to be humachines - devoid of any childfullness. Thought control - the perfect statist mindset and engineered by sociologists.

Dalton McGuinty thinks so. Ontario's Premier is so convinced that he has pledged untold amounts of money (from where, he doesn't say) to begin expanding kindergarten to every four- and five-year-old in the province. Ultimately, the idea is to create a “seamless” merger of child care and early childhood education, with elementary schools acting as year-round hubs for children from birth to age 12.

Charles Pascal, the Premier's kindergarten guru, says the scheme is nothing less than “transformational.” More and earlier kindergarten will boost literacy, graduation rates and postsecondary participation while reducing crime, poverty and social inequality. Middle-class parents like it because they think it will give their kids a leg up in life (and be a lot cheaper than day care). Advocates even say all-day kindergarten is essential to equip the province for the rigours of the innovation economy.

Yet, one of the most credible authorities in the field demolishes these claims. James Heckman is a University of Chicago Nobel laureate in economics. He is a strong believer in early intervention, and his work on the subject is routinely cited by Barack Obama's education team. He is also a realist about the evidence. It shows that early childhood education confers no long-term benefit on middle-class kids. Nor, in the form proposed by Mr. McGuinty, does it shrink the gap between the haves and have-nots. “Advocates and supporters of universal preschool often use existing research for purely political purposes,” he warns.

It's hard to know what to make of this story, but the message seems to confirm that being in this place means being a pothead, drunk, lazy good for nothing bum. New Brunswick - a statist dream.

A family of Belgian immigrants is claiming the New Brunswick government has mishandled its three attempts to start businesses in the province, costing the family a lot of money.
Patrick Henderson and his wife Marina came to Kent County in 2005, lured by the New Brunswick government's marketing campaign for immigrants.

When they settled in southeastern New Brunswick, they dreamed of opening a resort but claim they soon found the tourism statistics they were given by the province were inflated and that plan was scuttled.

So they opted to start a winery instead. That idea fell victim to government regulations on fruit growing.

Finally came the concept of producing goat cheese, except Patrick Henderson said the European-style crust on the cheese perplexed provincial inspectors.

"The inspector [told] us, 'Here you are not welcome, because here people eat cheddar. We don't need your goat cheese,'" he said.

"We've lost a lot of money. We come here with the fire to do something good, and something new, local products in New Brunswick. And now we are tired," he said.

"We don't know what we can do but we [lost] our motivation."

Gilles Martin, who is with a Kent County farm co-operative, said the situation sends the wrong message to other potential immigrant farmers.

"I think that what they've gone through is to us totally unacceptable. Unjust, to say the least," Martin said.

Call anyone in the phone book and ask them if it is legal to refuse a breathalyzer test and they will certainly tell you that it is not. Ask a newly minted lawyer, being paid by taxpayers, and the answer will be different.

CBC New Brunswick June 2nd:

A Moncton judge has tossed out breathalyzer test results at the centre of an impaired driving case that involved the death of a 14-year-old girl in 2007.

Judge George Rideout ruled on Tuesday that Alexander Beers's breathalyzer test results are not admissible in court after his lawyer argued last week that he was bullied by police into taking the test.

However, the judge denied a request for a stay of proceedings.

Beers, 20, is accused of fatally striking Satara Steeves who was walking along Ryan Road in the summer of 2007.

There was an audible gasp from Steeves's family when the decision was read in the Moncton courtroom.

Rideout heard arguments in court last week. Beers said he phoned Yves Robichaud, a legal aid lawyer, from the scene and explained what had happened.

Robichaud had testified he explained his options to Beers and advised him not to take the breathalyzer test. On that advice, Beers told police he wasn't taking the test.

He said Sgt. Jeffrey Johnston told him he would face charges for refusing the test and the consequences would be similar to the impaired driving causing death charges. Beers said he was confused, so the police offered to call the legal aid lawyer back.

Robichaud, who had only been in the job for 11 months, said Johnston told him he was counselling an offence by telling his client not to take the test and that he would be investigated for his actions. At that point, Robichaud changed his advice and told Beers to take the breathalyzer test as requested by the police.

Johnston denied the claim that he intimidated the lawyer.

The family of a Moncton teenager was angry Thursday after a man was found not guilty of impaired driving in the crash that took her life almost two years ago.
"I can't believe it. I buried my daughter two years ago," said Roger Steeves, his voice quivering and his eyes tearing up. "It's not right."
Steeves spoke briefly with reporters moments after Alexander Thomas Beers, 20, was acquitted in the July 27, 2007, crash that killed 14-year-old Satara Annick Steeves.

The court heard that after Beers refused the breathalyzer on the advice of Robichaud, the lawyer was called again and Johnston threatened to charge him with counselling an offence.
Johnston testified he acted professionally and did nothing wrong, while Robichaud and Beers told the court the sergeant was agitated and aggressive and threatened to investigate the lawyer, who changed his advice out of fear for his career and told Beers to give the sample.
In his decision, Rideout said Johnston went too far and he dismissed the breathalyzer as evidence.
Asked Thursday if the breathalyzer issue was an error by police, Gallant replied: "The court has found that it was, so we have to live with the court's decision. We have to respect the court's decision, and we'll be doing a review of our officer's actions."

While Steeves's family and friends didn't point fingers at anyone specifically after the verdict, they clearly expressed their feelings toward New Brunswick's justice system.
"That's what is acceptable to the system?" Satara's mother, Annette said. "Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Shame on the system."
Alan Wright, Satara's uncle, said the not guilty verdict felt like "being down and getting kicked in the stomach six times."

The outrage is justified - the judge, the lawyer and the accused should be ashamed.

Dear President Obama

A letter response from someone that knows to someone the media won't admit doesn't know.

Mr. President,

You face difficult challenges in matters such as achieving peace in the Middle East and protecting America from the threat of radical Islam and terrorism. These are challenges that have vexed past presidents, going as far back as our second president, John Adams. I have no doubt you appreciate both the gravity of these challenges and the enormous obstacles that exist to solving them.

I also have no doubt that you and your staff understood that, no matter what you said in your speech last Thursday in Cairo, there would be those who would take issue with you. That is always the case when attempting to solve problems that are as deep and emotionally-laden as these challenges are.

I am assuming it is your sincere hope that the approach you have chosen to take, as evidenced by what I’m sure was a carefully crafted speech, will ultimately prove successful. However, it pains me to say this sir, but, while you said in your speech that you are a “student of history,” it is abundantly clear that, in these matters, you do not know history and thus, as Santayana noted, you are doomed to repeat it. In doing so your efforts, however well-intentioned they may be, will not produce what you profess to hope they will produce.

A wise man once said that if you start with the wrong assumptions, no matter how logical your reasoning is, you will end up with the wrong conclusion. With all due respect Mr. President, you are starting with certain assumptions that are unsupported by history and an objective study of the ideology of political Islam.

You began in your speech by asserting that “tensions” exist between the United States and Muslims around the world, which, of course, is correct. Unfortunately, you then proceeded, incorrectly, to lay virtually all the blame for these tensions at the feet of America and the West. You blamed western colonialism, the Cold War, and even modernity and globalism.

A student of American history, who is not trying to reconstruct it to fit a modern politically correct narrative, would state that tensions between America and Muslims began with the unprovoked, four-decades long assault by the Muslim Barbary pirates against American shipping in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. I find it telling that you mentioned the Treaty of Tripoli in your speech but ignored the circumstances that led to it. That treaty was but one of numerous attempts by the United States to achieve peace with the jihadists of the Barbary Coast who were attacking our shipping and killing and enslaving our citizens and our soldiers – and who by their own admission were doing so to fulfill the call to jihad.

These jihadists were not acting to protest American foreign policy, which was decidedly isolationist, and there was no state of Israel to scapegoat. They were doing what countless Islamic jihadists have done throughout history – acting upon the hundreds of passages in the Qur’an and the Hadith that call upon faithful Muslims to kill, conquer or subjugate the infidel.

A student of world history would know that, for all the acknowledged evils of Western colonialism, these evils pale in comparison to the nearly 14 centuries of Islamic colonialism that began in Arabia under the leadership of Mohammed. The student of history would know that Islamic forces eradicated all Jewish and Christian presence from Arabia after Mohammed’s death, and then succeeded in conquering all of North Africa, most of the Middle East, much of Asia Minor, and significant portions of Europe and India – eventually creating an empire larger than Rome’s was at its peak.

The number of dead and enslaved during these many centuries of Islamic imperial conquest and colonialism have been estimated to total more than 300 million. What’s more, the wealth of many of the conquered nations and cultures was plundered by the Islamic conquerors, and millions of millions of non-Muslims who did survive were forced to pay onerous taxes, such as the “jizya,” a humiliation tax to the Islamic caliphs. Indeed, in some areas Christians and Jews were made to wear a receipt for the jizya around their neck as a mark of their dishonor.

These facts have not been invented by Christian or Jewish historical revisionists, but were chronicled by Muslim eyewitnesses throughout the past 14 centuries and are available to be researched by any person seeking an objective understanding of how Islam spread throughout the world.

You say in your speech that we must squarely face the tensions that exist between America and the Muslim world. That is a laudable notion with which I agree, but by casting Islam as the historical victim and the West (and by implication, America) as the aggressor, you do not face these tensions squarely, but alleviate the Muslim world from coming to grips with the jihadist ideology embedded in its holy books and acted upon for 1,400 years.

Even worse, you empower and embolden militant Islamists who regard your gestures as signs of weakness and capitulation.

The issue is not that all Muslims are terrorists or radicals or extremists. We all know that the majority of Muslims are not. We also know that many peace-loving Muslims are victims of Islamist violence.

The issue is this: what drives hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide to call for the death of Jews?

What drives millions of Muslims to riot, destroy property, and take innocent lives in reaction to the Danish cartoons?

What drives tens of thousands of Muslims to demand the execution of a British teacher whose only “crime” was allowing her students to name their teddy bears “Mohammed”? What drives countless Muslims worldwide to actively participate in, or fund, or provide nurture to, terrorist organizations?

What drives Muslims in mosques in America to proclaim and distribute materials that call for hatred of and the destruction of infidels?

What drives entire Islamic countries to prohibit the building of a Christian church or synagogue?

To assume, as you apparently do, that what drives these actions is not an ideology embedded in the holy books of Islam, but rather other “root causes,” most of which you lay at the feet of America and the West, is at best naïve and at worst dangerous.

Lastly, I must address your statement that “Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance.” Unfortunately, the examples you gave are the exception rather than the rule.

Historically speaking, I seriously doubt the Egyptian Copts, the Lebanese Maronites, the Christians in Bethlehem, the Assyrians, the Hindus, the Jews, and many others who have been persecuted by Islamic violence and supremacism, would agree with your assertion.

For instance, Christians and Jews became “Dhimmis,” a second class group under Islam. Dhimmis were forced to wear distinctive clothing; it was Baghdad’s Caliph Al-Mutawakkil, in the ninth century, who designated a yellow badge for Jews under Islam, which Hitler copied and duplicated in Nazi Germany nearly a thousand years later.

I witnessed first-hand the “tolerance” of Islam when Islamists ravaged my country of birth, Lebanon, in the 1970’s, leaving widespread death and destruction in their wake. I saw how they re-paid the tolerance that Lebanese Christians extended toward them. My experience is not an isolated one. When you make an unfounded assertion about the “proud tradition” of tolerance in Islam, you do a great disservice to the hundreds of millions of non-Muslims who have been killed, maimed, enslaved, conquered, subjugated or displaced – in the cause of Islamic jihad.

Mr. President, those of us like me who are ringing the alarm in America about the threat of radical Islam would like nothing better than to peacefully co-exist with the Muslim world. Most Americans would like nothing better than to peacefully co-exist with the Muslim world. The obstacle to achieving this does not lie with us in America and the West. It lies with the hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide, including many of their spiritual leaders, who take seriously the repeated calls to jihad in the Qur’an and the Hadith. Who regard “infidels” as inferior and worthy of conquering, subjugating and forcibly converting. Who support “cultural jihad” as a means to subvert non-Muslim societies from within. Who take seriously the admonitions throughout the Qur’an and the Hadith to convert the world to Islam – by force if necessary – and bring it under the rule of Allah.

Indeed we may very well be.

I'm ignoring the sexy story of the " breakthrough first" win of the NDP in Nova Scotia because their win is/was a natural progression of the morally confused state of politics in that province. If a weenie like Scott Brison can get elected in Nova Scotia as a federal MP, openly "marry" another man and the majority of the population just shrug, then I'm thinking Nova Scotia is too far down a path of a corrupted secular state to bother caring about them all. Let the statists rejoice; they will reap what they have sown. There may also be a lesson for gym teachers - stay in school.

The big world story in Canada is Minister Raitt. It is a typical Canadian story - people sticking their noses in other peoples' lives except when it really matters. We are a nation of gossips and passive aggressive ninnies; too ready to pounce on anyone that dares to be good, success driven and intelligent.

If the federal Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt actually were to resign – at least, if she were to quit over this particular baby – then all really is lost. No one with half a pea for a brain will ever run for Parliament again, not that from Ottawa yesterday there is much evidence anyone has done so.

On a day when Canadians learned of the death of a 20-year-old soldier in Afghanistan, most of their newspapers and a great chunk of the country's airwaves were filled with agonizing analysis of the accidentally tape-recorded remarks of Ms. Raitt in conversation with her then-aide, the dropsy-afflicted Jasmine MacDonnell.

This tape, itself in large measure the accidental recording of the two women chatting in a car as they drove around Victoria earlier this year (Ms. MacDonnell, need I add, had turned the recorder on by mistake), was left in a Parliament Hill loo (Ms. MacDonnell strikes again) and ended up in the hands of Halifax Chronicle Herald reporter Stephen Maher.

Alas and alack for them, it appears to have contained little of news value, which did not stop the Chronicle Herald from providing breathtaking amounts of coverage of its contents yesterday.

In the online version of the story, the paper offered links every three or four graphs to various excerpts of Ms. Raitt and Ms. MacDonnell in conversation almost as stupefying as was the e-mail exchange between Mr. Maher and Ms. MacDonnell (as detailed in his affidavit, sworn when Ms. MacDonnell went to court to try to keep the lid on), wherein he chided her for failing to let him know of an announcement. “You totally forgot to let me know about atlantic energy whatsit thingy,” he wrote, and she replied, “I totally did. The announcement came together really quickly. You still have my tape recorder so I say we're even.”

Other news organizations, talk shows and politicians followed the Chronicle Herald lead, with the result that by Question Period yesterday, MPs and various opposition leaders were calling Ms. Raitt's remarks “disparaging” and “irresponsible” and demanding she apologize and/or be fired, and by the time the spin doctors were appearing on the afternoon TV shows, Liberal pundit Warren Kinsella had upped the ante and was describing the minister's comments as “disgusting” and “deplorable.”

I was ready to beg for mercy before 9 a.m., but by late afternoon, when I saw my Ottawa colleague Jane Taber, whom I adore and admire, in conversation with CTV's Sandie Rinaldo, both of them quivering with excitement, I wanted to slit my wrists.

Ms. Rinaldo was asking Ms. Taber about the propriety of what Ms. Raitt had said on the tape, and said something like, “intemperate remarks, unguarded moments,” and Ms. Taber replied, “I would hope, even in private conversation, we wouldn't hear … ministers talking about other portfolios in such a cavalier way.”

Even in private? Are you bloody kidding me?

The two controversial remarks – made, remember, last January – were about Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq and the current medical isotope crisis. Ms. Raitt has the lead role on the file, but Ms. Aklukkaq is a weak second.

On the tape, Ms. MacDonnell said the isotope issue is confusing to a lot of people. “But it's sexy,” Ms. Raitt replied. “Radioactive leaks. Cancer.” It was clear as a bell she wasn't talking about cancer being sexy. About Ms. Aglukkaq, Ms. Raitt said, “Oh. Leona. I'm so disappointed.” Ms. MacDonnell said, “I wonder if it's her staff trying to shield her from it or whether she is just terrified.”

Ms. Raitt replied: “I think her staff is trying to shield her. Oh God. She's such a capable woman, but it's hard for her to come out of a co-operative government into this rough-and-tumble. She had a question in the House yesterday, or two days ago, that planked. I really hope she never gets anything hot.”

This is irresponsible? Disparaging? Disgusting? This is what prompted Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe to yesterday invoke the spectre of breast-cancer patients needing tests being told that a cabinet minister called their disease sexy; now, that's disgusting.

Ms. Raitt's brother Colin MacCormack died of lung cancer (caused by PCBs and dioxins, she told the Toronto Star's Rick Brennan last fall). His death at the age of 37 pushed her to get a master's in chemistry specializing in environmental biochemical toxicology; you think she doesn't know that cancer isn't sexy?

You should hear what women say in private – about friends they love, about colleagues they admire, let alone about men they might like to shag, strangers, or say, bosses. You should hear what editors say at news meetings, and how, while deciding which stories go where in the next day's paper, they describe those stories. You think they aren't sometimes called sexy?

The Canadian media made of the proverbial molehill this sad little mountain, the story feeding on itself, the language growing more outrageous and more outraged, with each news cycle. The politicians played along because that's what they do. The result is simply dispiriting.

I thought Ms. Raitt should have resigned when Ms. MacDonnell left those confidential papers behind, and regretted it was her young aide who caught the axe instead. (In fairness to Ms. Raitt, she offered her resignation but the Prime Minister wouldn't accept it. In fairness to me, I didn't know then that Ms. MacDonnell is whatever the opposite of a kleptomaniac is.) I don't think Ms. Raitt ought to offer it again.

And I don't think she should do the Canadian thing and apologize. To whom and for what? To Ms. Aglukkaq, for calling her capable? To cancer patients, for calling the isotope shortage a sexy issue? For using in private language so temperate most of us would be proud to have used it in public?

What a nation of ninnies we have become.

The Chronicle Herald should apologize for wasting time on the dumbest, most perverse story ever published. The reporter should be fired for being an absolute moron and all of the talkers on radio should visit their therapist for being voyeurs.

Shocking Details of Reporter's Lives Revealed On Tape

It's unbelievable, really.

An audio tape of reporters speaking candidly about their jobs, co-workers, bosses and about members of the Harper family was found in an Ottawa area restaurant. One of the CBC reporters accidentally taped her colleagues speaking openly about "national issues" during a meal time meeting. In one instance, a CTV reporter was overheard talking about wanting to make out with the wife of Prime Minister Harper. " I bet the bitch prefers doggy to cats," laughed the reporter. Other comments by the other reporters were not clearly audible.

Much of the recording details concerns about their failing industry. A female Globe and Mail reporter is overheard saying that she wished that Globe columnist Christie Blatchford was axed from her job and replaced by someone she described as more "likable." The same reporter slagged Globe columnist Rex Murphy calling him, " an annoying townie freak" and describing his looks as a "cross between a pit bull and a tired whore." The comment elicited much laughter and inaudible comments from the other reporters.

One controversial comment overheard was a Halifax reporter saying he hoped that the NDP scored big enough in the Nova Scotia provincial election to "provide jobs, topless bars and pot" for all. "Hear, Hear, pot for every kitchen" the reporters chimed while offering a toast to NDP leader Darrel Dexter. One CBC reporter was then overheard hoping that a "topless lesbian" became the new Minister of Justice for the province. "Imagine that," she laughed. "Pictures for all," the reporters squealed with delight.

A spokesperson for the Canadian association of reporters called the release of the tape as " another example of how the Harper government uses private conversations to intimidate and harass the media." "It's got to stop," said the spokesperson. "The Harper conservative knew the reporters were not speaking on the record and were on their lunch break." When questioned by bloggers as to why reporters were drinking while they were supposed to be working, the spokesperson said, "it's normal for reporters to use relaxants."

Scott Brison, speaking on behalf of Michael Ignatieff, called the release of the tape as proof that the Harper government was unethical, sneaky and nasty. "This is one more nail in the Harper government's political coffin," said Brison. "It's time we replaced the Harper government with a friendlier government to the media."

NDP leader Jack Layton's office called the release of the tape, "a cynical ploy to stop democracy." "We know first hand how this government likes to tape private conversations."

The Prime Minister's office refused to comment, only saying that reporters were free to speak their minds in a free society and without threat and embarrassment. "Private conversations are private," said the tersely worded statement from the PMO.

Shawn Graham's office offered sympathy and help to find a job for a student intern fired by a New Brunswick newspaper for breaking the story about unrest among UNB professors for granting the premier an honorary degree.

Matt McCann was starting his second summer as a student intern at the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal in May when he uncovered the story about the group of University of New Brunswick professors and staff upset at the idea of giving Graham the degree.

The provincial newspaper splashed the story its front page but a day later fired McCann.
McCann told CBC News that Shawna Richer, the Telegraph-Journal's editor, told him he would not be allowed to remain at the newspaper because of the story.

"She told me my story was seriously unbalanced and severely underplayed the university's side of the story," said McCann, who worked at the Saint John-based newspaper's Fredericton bureau.

"She said that the newspaper has worked hard to establish a good relationship with UNB and that I had damaged that relationship. She said that I had damaged the reputation of the newspaper and she called my reporting reckless."

McCann admitted that there were minor errors in his story, such as spelling a name incorrectly and getting Graham's undergraduate degree wrong.

After hearing about what happened to him, McCann said, an official in Graham's office called him.

"The premier's office expressed sympathy at what had happened," he said, adding that Graham's office asked he send in a resumé, which he did.

It is stories like the aforementioned tale above which illustrate why young people should move out west and why those that do won't come back. Be in this place and be humiliated by your boss and the political establishment. Disgraceful. And, since when is it the role of the premier's office and his staff to accept resumes? Is that how jobs are obtained in this place?

Ann Coulter makes many people squirm, mostly she makes me squirm with delight because she can present facts and turn a phrase better than anyone. I didn't know that, in the USA, 49 MILLION babies were executed by abortion in the past 36 years. Stunning.

Meanwhile, fewer than 2 million Muslims live in America and, while Muslims are less murderous than abortionists, I'm fairly certain they've killed more than five people in the United States in the last 36 years. For some reason, the number "3,000" keeps popping into my head.

So in a country that is more than 50 percent pro-life -- and 80 percent opposed to the late-term abortions of the sort performed by Tiller -- only five abortionists have been killed. And in a country that is less than 0.5 percent Muslim, several dozen Muslims have killed thousands of Americans.

But the killing of about one abortionist per decade leads liberals to condemn the entire pro-life movement as "domestic terrorists." At least liberals have finally found some terrorists they'd like to send to Guantanamo.

Tiller bragged about performing 60,000 abortions, including abortions of viable babies, able to survive outside the mother's womb. He made millions of dollars performing late-term abortions so gruesome that only two other abortionists -- not a squeamish bunch -- in the entire country would perform them.

Kansas law allows late-term abortions only to save the mother's life or to prevent "irreversible physical damage" to the mother. But Tiller was more than happy to kill viable babies, provided the mothers: (1) forked over $5,000; and (2) mentioned "substantial and irreversible conditions," which, in Tiller's view, apparently included not being able to go to concerts or rodeos or being "temporarily depressed" on account of their pregnancies.

In return for blood money from Tiller's profitable abattoir, Democrats ran a political protection racket for the late-term abortionist.

The "trauma" Of Being Led By A Dumb Government

Being dumb ain't a bad thing; you could become premier. I know it's not kind to say such things, but someone needs to state the obvious. I mean, how else does one reconcile the ongoing stunning stupidity of our provincial government?

Since coming into office with a weak mandate, the provincial Liberals have behaved like a staged act of self-help hippies selling utopian slogans. We 'were' to become a self-sufficient province by 20something. Be in this place was the draw card. New Brunswickers needed a "can do" attitude and a proper statist government in a support role, then all our troubles could be turned into daisies. Turn that frown upside down and it becomes a smile. Seriously, that's how they think and do.

A BILLION dollar budget deficit rocked their slogan world. First the ferries were told to go - saving 5 cents, then they found endless petty cash to pay equity to all their bitter, lifeless female employees in this place, now they have changed the rules for hiring - sending a clear message that being bilingual in this place means being a francophone. Dumb!

For many years anglophones have complained that New Brunswick's language policies were driving away our talented and our educated. Government after government said that wasn't so, and those that said so were racist, bigoted or worse - they were 'core' creeps.

These days, being in this place means shutting your freakin' mouth and bowing to the prince of poetic words, Premier Graham, lest you be denied equal access to jobs, growth and responsibilities. Be in this place and be less.

Last summer, the Province began to advertise for the position of Provincial Medical Director of Trauma and I was asked to submit my application. I did. It was never acknowledged - verbally or in writing. Indeed, I don't have one piece of paper to show that I ever applied. My impression, perhaps mistaken, was that I was invited to apply in order to give credibility to the search process. I applied anyway.
In the back of my mind, I always had some trepidation about my application. My concerns were not unfounded: I had been told by a highly placed bureaucrat in the health-care system that I would never get the position because I was "not French." I dismissed the statement initially, as the person speaking to me had no idea as to my French language capabilities. Many of my patients were francophone and I communicated with them in French without difficulty. I spoke French regularly with my medical colleagues throughout the Province. In addition, I had been acting as the Trauma Director on an informal basis (without pay) for the past six years, and had considerable first-hand knowledge of where the system needed to be fixed. Surely, my expertise could be brought to bear on the process in some way.
As months went on, I remained the only candidate for the job. I was not entirely surprised, given that there are only a handful of trauma specialists in the country. When I asked about the delay, I was told that the search process would be expanded to an international level if necessary to ensure there was a "selection of candidates."
The job posting for the position required that the candidate speak French at an "intermediate level." Bilingualism was obviously a necessity for the position, and I was certain I could meet this qualification. I had myself assessed and confirmed that, indeed, I could speak French at an Intermediate Plus (Level 2 ) level - a higher level than provided in the job posting. I also began working with a tutor, who expected me to reach a Level 3 (Superior) by summer.
On March 17, 2009 I completed formal language testing with the province as part of the application process, which again confirmed my capacity at an Intermediate Plus level. Shortly thereafter, it was rumoured - again through obscure back channels - that I had "flunked" my French language test. I was more than surprised by this, and contacted Dr. Dennis Furlong to address the matter. I was later told that the language criteria had been "changed" from a Level 2 to a Level 3, and that I therefore did not meet the language requirements of the job. Despite my commitment to reaching a Level 3 by summer, it was felt that I could not be accorded the position. Nevertheless, I was still invited to participate in the interview process, along with another candidate from Quebec. Mired down in this discussion, Dr. Furlong floated the idea of a co-chair scenario - one anglophone and one francophone. This proposal was more costly to the system, and would amount to duplication. I again reassured Dr. Furlong that my French language skills were equal to the task at hand.
As the proposed date for an interview approached, my candidacy was met with ever more resistance. Despite my repeated requests for privacy surrounding my application, I would wake up to Minister Murphy and Dr. Furlong discussing my application on the morning radio show. Dr. Furlong began alluding to the fact that the successful candidate would effectively have to give up his surgical practice. This was a surprising and incredible notion. If I gave up my surgical practice, there would be one trauma surgeon left in the entire province to deliver trauma care. When I asked for clarification, I learned instead that I would be paid at a rate well below other specialists in administrative positions. While no one wants to hear a physician "cry poor" over money, I can assure you that I will be paying off my medical school debt for many years to come.
Contrary to Dr. Furlong's disappointing comments on the radio, I did not withdraw my candidacy because of the restrictions it would impose on my surgical practice. In addition, the prospect of competing for the job did not scare me. I simply withdrew from a process that became mired down in politics, rumours and innuendo, that did not respect my right to privacy, and in which I had lost all confidence. I repeatedly requested a job description, but one was never provided. It came to a point that I no longer knew what job I was applying for.

Trenholm, who is among 25 trauma specialists in Canada, has said his ability in French met the original job requirement but the standard was subsequently raised so he didn't qualify.

Thomas said it's unfortunate that language is becoming an obstacle to hiring the head of the trauma system.

"I didn't care what language he spoke, as long as my life was saved and they have done it in Saint John. What difference does it make? Linguistic issues should have no play whatsoever in health care," Thomas said.

"It is the people that are more able to save people's lives, to prolong people's lives, and to give people that are caught with health problems the best quality of life possible."

Thomas credits Trenholm and his team at the Saint John Regional Hospital with saving his life after he suffered multiple serious injuries in the crash, including a broken neck.

After his accident in the Acadian peninsula, Thomas was transferred to the Bathurst hospital, but doctors there felt he needed more advanced care. It took hours for the trauma centre in Saint John to agree to take him and that came after another hospital was contacted first.

Political expedience, a touchy language debate and a long-standing rivalry between two cities have all come crashing to a head in New Brunswick. The government is currently mulling over a site for a proposed provincial tertiary trauma centre. Three hospitals — two in Moncton and one in Saint John — are engaging in some high-level lobbying to become trauma central.

The debate can be traced back to a very high profile trauma care blunder in 2005 that nearly cost a man his life. Donald Thomas, 67, from Tracadie in the heart of New Brunswick's Acadian north, was on his way to nearby Lameque to take some fruit to his hospitalized wife when he was involved in a serious head-on collision. Despite his critical status, he was forced to wait 18 hours for surgery while the trauma team figured out what to do with him. The drama that was to unfold would have wide-ranging implications for how trauma services are delivered in the province.

Legislation that will freeze the wages of New Brunswick doctors for two years and suspend their right to go to binding arbitration was introduced by the Liberal government Tuesday.
Health Minister Mike Murphy said he had no choice but to introduce the "difficult" legislation after doctors insisted that the government stick with the $36-million tentative agreement negotiated last December.
"This is a difficult day for the government and the medical society with whom we have had a very good relationship in the last three years," he told reporters. "It is unfortunate. The position of government is not necessarily unreasonable. The position of the medical society is not necessarily unreasonable.
"But we are both in this boat, this fiscal storm of (an) unprecedented nature."
Murphy said the legislation extends the previous contract for fee-for-service doctors that ran out April 1, 2008, until April 1, 2010, with no annual wage increases in both years.
The health minister said recently the provincial government asked doctors to consider accepting no wage increase for another 10 months.

A Muslim convert who said he was opposed to the U.S. military shot two soldiers outside an Arkansas recruiting station, killing one, police said Monday.

"This individual appears to have been upset with the military, the Army in particular, and that's why he did what he did," Little Rock Police Lt. Terry Hastings said in a phone interview.

"He has converted to (Islam) here in the past few years," Hastings said. "We're not completely clear on what he was upset about. He had never been in the military.

"He saw them standing there and drove up and shot them. That's what he said."

Hastings identified the man in custody as Carlos Bledsoe, 24, of Little Rock, who goes by the name of Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad.

Police Chief Stuart Thomas said William Long, 24, of Conway was killed. Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, of Jacksonville was wounded and in stable condition, Thomas said.

The soldiers wore fatigues, had recently completed basic training and volunteered to help attract others to the military, Thomas said. He said the gunman targeted the military but was not believed to be part of a broader scheme.

Thomas said Muhammad would be charged with first-degree murder, plus 15 counts of committing a terroristic act. He said those counts result from the gunfire occurring near other people.

Hastings said the attacker pulled up in a car outside the Army-Navy recruiting office around 10:30 a.m. CT and fired at the soldiers outside.

It's very hard for me to be sympathetic to the modern school teacher. They are paid damn high wages, many don't have to have any natural teaching skills, and all of them enjoy job benefits second to none.

Teacher morale is lower now than a woman with more than two decades of experience has seen it. [Ed: is it just my comprehension skills, but is this sentence poorly written?]
Heather Palmer said she's discouraged by what's happening in the education system.
"Teachers are expected to do more with less and are finding the workload extremely heavy," Palmer said. "It's very difficult to meet the needs of children. I'm seeing young teachers, early in their careers, frustrated and struggling. They are burning out, and I don't see how it's going to be any better with the new school year."
A recent cut to the education budget has reduced support staff in schools, including library assistants, behaviour mentors and teacher assistants.
The Liberal government is expecting to run a $741-million deficit this year - even with the cuts to many departments and programs.
But Brent Shaw, president of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association, said students shouldn't have to suffer because of the recession.
"I understand the government has to make some cuts, but those cuts do not have to be as significant as they are," Shaw said. "If the Education Department were willing to look internally to save funds, they could avoid taking away so many resources that are critical to kids."
Shaw said the association has suggested ways the government could save money, including cutting back on the number of student assessments and getting rid of the Innovative Learning Fund.
But many of the suggestions have been shot down.
Education Minister Kelly Lamrock said there are always going to be times when unions and management don't agree. And this is one of those times, he said.
"I believe strongly that if you want to improve literacy scores you have to give teachers more freedom to teach; evaluate how everyone is doing; put out report cards to show what's working and what isn't; and reward those innovative ideas that are really changing how we teach," Lamrock said. [Ed: sorry boss, but nothing will change until discipline and hard work are demanded in the schools. As a society, when are heading for a disaster. I have no doubt about that. From the ashes of that meltdown a new order will rise up and replace complacency, minimalism and weakness with strength, hard work and awareness.

At American Indian, the largest ethnic group is Asian, followed by Latinos and African Americans. Some of the schools’ critics contend that high-scoring Asian Americans are driving the high test scores, but blacks and Latinos do roughly as well — in fact, better on some tests…

The short answer is that American Indian attracts academically motivated students, relentlessly (and unapologetically) teaches to the test, wrings more seat time out of every school day, hires smart young teachers, demands near-perfect attendance, piles on the homework, refuses to promote struggling students to the next grade, and keeps discipline so tight that there are no distractions or disruptions. Summer school is required.

The lesson is discipline works. The learning outcome is that hard work produces best. The best possible solution is that eliminating liberal ideals produces better citizens.

Stupid People Need Pay Equity

It didn't take long for the dumbest minister in the Graham government to reveal her inner stupid. Only a dumb, a totally dumb person, would dare create a new government department after releasing a BILLION DOLLAR budget deficit, and after announcing cuts to rural ferry services because there is no money. Oh yeah, baby, you're hot with dumb air. I'm really beginning to think that someone is poisoning the air in the cabinet room or the entire provincial cabinet is smoking dope because their ability to think in a time of "crisis" (so called) is quite revealing. This Graham liberal government is dumb!

But, fear not, the opposition Tories ain't leading the IQ factory either.

Currently pay equity is only implemented in one part of the public service - the civil service.
"Pay equity legislation is essential to New Brunswick," said Mary Schryer, the minister responsible for the status of women. [Ed: having a job should be essential]
"Today is a great day for the province of New Brunswick ... for myself personally as a minister and as a woman and as a mother who has a daughter about to go into the workforce," she said. [Ed: She knows that a dumb person with an education can get a high paying job and do sweet f*** all]
Under the legislation, employers will do job evaluations that compare traditionally female jobs with traditionally male jobs based on skill, effort, responsibility and working conditions.
"Every job in the public sector will go through this process," said Schryer.
She said the new bureau will be in place by April.
"Once employers are done with implementing the pay equity bureau, calculation of the valuation of differences in compensation and pay adjustments will take place," she said.
The act states the changes must be complete within 24 months of the bureau being established and the employer must report on its results to the bureau within 25 months.
The legislation also creates an arbitrator to resolve disputes. [Ed: More government jobs doing useless work - sigh]
Schryer had no estimate on what it would cost to implement pay equity across the public service or how many women will be affected until the inequities are determined. [Ed: Dumb, dumb, stupid and retarded *** billion dollar deficits for years]

New Brunswick's Progressive Conservatives now say it may be time for legislation to impose pay equity on the private sector, shifting from the position they held when in government. [ ED: DUMB!!!!!!]

The Tories had favoured a voluntary approach for private employers when they were in office, but that altered when the Liberal government introduced legislation on Friday for pay equity in the public sector.

The Liberal government's legislation will set up a pay equity bureau that will provide oversight to ensure the policy, which comes into force on April 1, 2010, is being enforced.

While the proposed Liberal bill covers the public sector, Tory MLA Margaret-Ann Blaney, who served as a labour minister and status of women minister in the Bernard Lord government, said she no longer feels as reluctant as she once did about legislating pay equity in the private sector. [Ed: because she is a statist too and a dumb statist to boot - God help us all]

When she was minister, she gave the private sector five years, which ends in 2010, to move towards pay equity.

"If there wasn't a demonstrable difference in the reduction of the wage gap, the pay gap, then we would have to look at legislating the private sector. We have not seen a demonstrable difference in the pay gap."

These people are all totally devoid of any intelligence or capacity to think clearly. They are dumb. We need a new political force in New Brunswick, and the sooner the better. The Liberals, PCs, NDP and Greens are all cut from the same statist cloth.

BILLION DOLLAR Budget deficits and they have time and unknown resources for pay equity bullshit. Unbelievable, totally unbelievable.

New Brunswick will be the first Canadian province to declare bankruptcy.

Landmark Court Ruling Has Liberals Worried

A US appeals court has largely upheld a landmark ruling that liberals lied about the health risks of progressive policies.
Washington's Court of Appeals rejected an appeal by liberals against a 2006 decision that banned labels such as "low risk" and "progressive".
Companies including George Soros USA were found guilty of racketeering and fraud over the issue.
Judges upheld the previous ruling, but excluded one denier and two acorn groups from their judgement.
They ruled that the political bodies - Council for Progressive Research-USA and Lifestyle Institute - had not produced or sold concepts, so could be excluded.
And the firm Legit was excused because it had co-operated with the authorities and acknowledged health risks of faux progressive policies.
But the judges rejected an argument from the other left wingers that they had never claimed that "progressive" policies were not harmful.
"Defendants knew of their falsity at the time and made the statements with the intent to deceive the general public," Friday's ruling said.
Denials
The 2006 ruling said many liberals had set up a "partner's agreement" not to compete over whose policies were the least damaging to the public.
Lawyers for the liberal elite denied that they had conspired to avoid public discussion of lifestyle risks.
The original ruling also required firms to issue "corrective statements" about lifestyle effects and addiction.
It has not been applied while the case has been under appeal.
Manny Garish, lawyer for liberal research firm AlternativeLife - the parent of the Democrat Liberal Party - said the court's ruling was "not supported by the law or the evidence presented at trial".
"We believe the exceptional importance of these issues justifies further review," he said.
Other organizations that were contesting the 2006 ruling included British, American, Canadian, French, Italian, and German progressives.
The liberals are now likely to take their appeal before the US Supreme Court, although commentators say that their chances of success are slim.
In a decision last December on an unrelated case, the Supreme Court ruled that people can sue liberals over the misleading marketing of "low risk" or "progressive" policies.

Fewer children being born unwanted means a lot more children are now being born into homes where they do receive love and affection in the home and that's enormously important.

If Henry Morgentaler had become notorious for illegally supplying women with a drug which 17 studies have linked to breast cancer and which increases the chance of dangerous future premature delivery, placenta previa, ectopic pregnancy and low birth weight, and which is harmful to the point of increasing the suicide rate for depressed or thought-disordered women, it is not likely the Senate of the University of Western Ontario would have been fooled into honouring him. Strangely, because that "drug" is the procedure called induced abortion, he will be declared a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa . The UWO press release which announces this reads like a tract full of the shrill euphemisms of the abortion partisan, where the concepts "child" and "dead" need not intrude.

The Doctor of Death, with his honorary degree, and his legion of die hard fans, live lives devoid of truth, humanity and sincerity. Does anyone believe Morgentaler's own words at his University of Western Ontario address when he said he was killing innocent life to prevent another Holocaust? Does anyone really believe that children today are happier, more supported, more loved than ever before?

Let's not kid ourselves. People who support abortion believe in the culture of death. Oh, yes they do. They also believe we all evolved from apes.

Let's see if the New Brunswick government is capable of hiring lawyers who are wise enough to make Morgentaler and his ilk pay for their own evil.

Jordan IS Palestine and Israel IS the Promised Land

I often read the typical left-wing chime: criticizing Israel is not anti-semitic. When the chorus of left-wingers chirp their concern for the faux Palestinian plight, I'm reminded that knowing history is far more important than knowing the news. Criticizing Israel may or may not be anti-semitic, but it is a form of destructive and dishonest thinking.

I've read much on the subject of the pitiful Palestinians, this article explains it best. Palestine 2.0: Sultan Knish:

Palestinian nationalism has always been a crock, a transparently phony justification for terrorism that has always come before nationalism. Palestine was never a country or a state. It was the name given by the Roman occupation forces to a region they were administering, a region far larger than modern day Israel. There was never an Arab Palestinian king or ruler until Arafat. There was never a separate country called Palestine. The Post WW1 Palestine Mandate in the 20th century was used to create two states, an Arab state, Jordan, and a smaller state, Israel.

Nearly two decades of terrorism have turned the endless rounds of peace negotiations into a joke. A state of affairs that never would have come into being, had Israel not completely withdrawn from Gaza in the first place.

So once again, who wants or needs a Palestinian state?

Israel did not come into being out of pity for the millions of Jews killed in the Holocaust. Nor did it come into being thanks to US aid or support. Both of those however are common myths.

The State of Israel was in place well before the Holocaust, in the form of an embryonic country of farmers who drained the swamps, businessmen who set up shops, journalists who printed newspapers, and soldiers who trained to protect and defend their homeland. When the UN recognized Israel, it simply accepted the fait accompli that Israel existed and was capable of taking care of itself, which it proved by fighting the armies of the surrounding Arab nations to a standstill. It did it without US military aid, which only came into the picture much later with the Kennedy administration. It did it, because the people of Israel genuinely wanted their own state and worked to make it happen.

By 1942, 17 years after the Palestine Mandate, the Jews of Israel had built a thriving country, from power generators to vast stretches of farmland, from a revived language to the Technion, created in 1924, which is considered one of the world's leading electrical engineering and computer science schools in the world.

17 years after Oslo, the Palestinian Arabs have built nothing but death and destruction. Worse yet they've taken everything that was given to them and turned it into either a weapon or a bribe. By every standard, they have failed to show their ability to build or run a functioning state. Not even the most liberally minded thinker can point to anything in the Palestinian Authority leadership that suggests that they're capable of running a functional state. Which is why that same species will naturally duck the question and begin blaming Israel instead.

And that answers our question at last. Who needs a Palestinian state? Someone who is either ignorant, foolish or needs to destroy Israel.

The Two State Solution is not a formula for any kind of stability or end to the violence. It's meant to take the violence to a whole new level. It is a formula for the destruction of Israel. 17 years of peacemaking by Israelis has produced 17 years of terrorism by the Palestinian Arabs. Everything sowed on the Palestinian Authority, from money to guns, from autonomy to infrastructure, have come up as dragon's teeth.

Palestine is not a state. It was never a state. It will never be a state. It is currently ruled by two factions who have both disowned a negotiated Palestinian state in favor of the destruction of Israel. It is not a country, it is a weapon.

Palestine is a gun aimed at the head of Israel with one goal, its destruction. Palestine is a gun aimed at the head of every Jew in the world, legitimizing the worst and ugliest kinds of bigotry. Palestine is an imaginary place given form as a vicious myth brainwashing generation after generation of Jordanian and Egyptian Arabs to call themselves Palestinians and kill and die in the name of perpetuating a second Holocaust, all for the glory of Allah, Mohammed, Marx, not to mention Saddam Hussein, Ahmadinejad, the House of Saud, and every cause and ruler with an interest in toppling Israel into the dust.

Palestine is death. It exists only as a form of living death by a population taught to see themselves as willing martyrs to the bomb belt from birth. It breathes death, it celebrates death, it teaches death and preaches death. It is the final ugly end of the hatred and cruelty bottled up in the Arab and Islamic dictatorships of the region. It is the true face of Islam and its shining reflection in the mirror of the Western press and diplomats is the true measure of their Dhimmism.
The Cult of Death in Palestine and the war against Israel is only a preview for the West of things to come. Palestine is not a place, it is hate and homicide boiled down into myth. Palestine is not only in Israel. It is in Paris and London. It is in Madrid and Detroit. It is in Sydney and Moscow. It is everywhere that the toxic brew of Muslim fanaticism and Arab nationalism flows. Its flag is the flag of death. Its constitution is a death warrant for every free nation. Its legislature is a smug coven of obese terrorist chieftains sending their followers off to death with the promise of virgin demons fornicating with them in Paradise.

Palestine 2.0 is a monster with only one purpose, to create Holocaust 2.0. That is who needs a Palestinian state. That is why the far left and the far right are both so hellbent on bringing one into being. Accepting the Two State Solution means accepting death. Rejecting it means embracing life.

Conrad Black Guilty of Not Being a Statist/Liberal/Progressive

I'm loving that the rabble crowd of nasty statist/liberal/socialist/progressives ain't liking that the Supreme Court of the USA will hear an innocent man's plea. I'm also certain that the hucksters who helped convict him are very worried too. So be it.

Let me list things about Conrad that aren’t relevant to what I’m about to say in this piece. He’s a brilliant entrepreneur, an acclaimed historical biographer, a commentator of note. Both as a creator of media venues and as an author he has contributed in major ways to the public discourse of our times. He married my former wife, which doesn’t necessarily endear him to me, though I’d sooner have him as a competitor than I’d have most other people as partners.

Now let me add one thing that is relevant: He’s innocent.

Last year a Chicago jury convicted Conrad and three co-defendants of three counts of mail fraud. He was also convicted of one count of obstruction of justice. Three months ago he began serving a six-and-a-half year prison sentence in Florida. Last week a three-judge panel heard oral arguments in his and his co-defendants’ combined appeal.

I listened to the appeal (so can anyone with a computer, here) with fascination bordering on disbelief. The three learned appellate court judges, Richard A. Posner, Michael S. Kanne and Diane S. Sykes, reserved judgment. It’s likely that they were only playing devil’s advocate during the hearing, testing the mettle of defense lawyer Andrew Frey and his colleagues, but they gave an inspired imitation of a bunch of lazy and even biased jurists who hadn’t done their homework, hadn’t bothered reading the defense briefs and hadn’t a clue about the case.

Perhaps shocking defense lawyers is the purpose of Judge Posner and his colleagues. If counsel can recover from a hostile onslaught, based on apparent ignorance, their briefs may have merit. Call it tough love, Chicago-style. It may be how Yanks do the Socratic method.

The prosecutors who set out to railroad Conrad and his co-defendants didn’t lack zeal and energy. What they lacked was evidence. From their initial allegation that my friend and his colleagues stole some US$80-million from the stockholders of Hollinger International — itself a vast reduction from a pre-trial smear campaign about the theft of hundreds of millions — District Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald’s chastened team withdrew another US$20-million as the trial progressed. What the jurors took with them into the jury room at the end involved the alleged misappropriation of some US$60-million.

What they came out with, after many days of deliberation, was US$6.1-million — in monetary terms, about 10% of the prosecution’s case. They acquitted on 90%. Of course, a 10% victory for the prosecution is still a 100% defeat for the defense. All defendants were sentenced to varying terms (and types) of incarceration, which led to last week’s appeal.

It was no great surprise that the jurors had thrown out nine of 13 charges against Conrad. Lead prosecutor Eric Sussman (now in private practice) had a vivid imagination but no hand. He couldn’t sell the jurors on Conrad having spent some US$60-million of the stockholders’ money through racketeering schemes, phony non-compete agreements, birthday parties, or holidays in the South Seas for a simple reason: The evidence went the other way. The surprise was that Sussman and his team somehow managed to juggle the cards in their non-existent hand into making twelve citizens believe that there was 1) evidence on which they could find that Conrad obstructed justice, and 2) evidence that Conrad and his co-accused dipped their hands in the till to the tune of US$5.5-million in one transaction and about US$600,000 in another.

But there was no such evidence. If anything, there was evidence to the contrary.

The prosecution introduced videotape from security cameras to show that Conrad moved boxes from his office. If moving boxes were a crime, he would stand fairly convicted. But the crime charged was obstructing justice, specifically U.S. justice, and the prosecution presented no evidence for that. None. Conrad was transferring boxes from his own custody in Canada to his own custody in Canada, from an office from which he was being evicted to his home on the last long weekend before the eviction. When he was ordered to surrender the boxes on the first business day next, he did. The prosecution contended he could have removed pertinent material from the boxes while he had them in his home. Well, he could have done so in his office, too. If he had wanted to tamper with anything in those boxes — and there was no evidence that he did — he could have tampered with it in one place as easily as in the other. Perhaps the charge should have been “Could Have Obstructed Justice.” Conrad’s counsel said he never saw an obstruction case based on flimsier evidence in 45 years of practice.

Judge Posner called the timing of moving the boxes “bizarre.” Bizarre to start moving one’s boxes a week or so before one is evicted? To me, the judge’s comment seemed bizarre.

With regard to the US$5.5-million allegation, the prosecution’s evidence was that this payment was fully authorized management fees owed by Hollinger International to Conrad and his executives. Yes, that’s right. O-w-e-d. To the defendants.

The prosecution’s star witness, Conrad’s former partner, David Radler — who had agreed to testify for the prosecution in exchange for a lenient sentence — told the jury that he decided to “re-characterize” some management fees due to four executives as non-compete fees for a Canadian tax-advantage. There was no loss to the Hollinger International.

Pardon me, you might ask. How can the prosecutor expect a jury to convict anyone of theft with leading evidence that it wasn’t? Easy. By inviting the jury to disbelieve the prosecution’s own evidence.

And so the jury did.

Well, and why not, the appeal court seemed to ask last week. They’re entitled to disbelieve it, aren’t they?

But excuse me, mumbled the defense after it recovered consciousness, disbelieving disproof doesn’t amount to proof. You can’t say to a jury: “The defendant is a thief,” then call a witness who says: “Oh no, he isn’t,” and then say to the jury: “Okay, you heard our witness, just disbelieve him and convict.” If the jury does, it will have convicted perversely, on no evidence.

But maybe the jurors didn’t convict for this reason. Even the Chicago prosecutors didn’t have confidence in the law being that much of a Dickensian ass, so they offered an alternate theory. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, said the prosecutors, if you think the defendants only took money that was owed to them anyway and caused no monetary loss to Hollinger International, we say they still deprived the company of their honest services by taking money under an inappropriate heading. That’s a breach of fiduciary duty and a crime.

No, it isn’t, says the defense on appeal. Maybe it’s a breach of fiduciary duty but no crime. If the jury convicted Conrad and his co-defendants for theft, it convicted them on no evidence, and if it convicted for deprivation of honest services, it convicted on no criminal conduct. This calls for a new trial.

Oh there was evidence of naked theft, says Judge Posner. There must have been. This jury wouldn’t have convicted on no evidence. It acquitted on nine counts, didn’t it? The trial judge says there was evidence, and she was there every day. We weren’t, were we? You never saw us. Come to think of it, you weren’t there either, Mr. Frey, so thank you, we’ve already spent an hour on this, and all Mr. Black needs to spend in prison is six and a half years. Next case.

I’m sure the judges and their law clerks will now look at the material carefully. I’ve no doubt the Seventh Circuit takes its job seriously. But this is just about what the hearing sounded like. If you don’t believe me, boot up your computer and listen.
